Joint EU representation in Brussels will strengthen Danish fisheries' position
20.01.2020
Establishing a joint EU representation in Brussels will strengthen Danish fisheries' position in the EU's Common Fisheries Policy
The EU's Common Fisheries Policy directly regulates Danish fisheries. Therefore, The Danish fishing sector needs to further strengthen the efforts and its presence in Brussels.
Against this background, the Danish Fishers PO and Danish Pelagic Producer Organization has from 1st January 2020 joint forces and established a joint representation in Brussels by the name:
Danish Fisheries in Brussels
The purpose is to strengthen Danish fisheries' position in the EU's common fisheries policy for the benefit of the Danish fishing sector.
- First and foremost, we strengthen the position of the Danish fishing sector by highlighting Danish fisheries in the EU and the in Common Fisheries Policy. We want to make rules and regulations for the sector which, to a greater extent than is currently the case, take into account fishing in the northern waters such as the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the North Atlantic.
Furthermore, we want to increase our cooperation with other players in Brussels having interests in the CFP – Other fisheries organizations and NGOs, which are also largely present in Brussels, says Kenn Skau Fischer, CEO of the Danish Fishers PO.
Danish Fisheries in Brussels is a natural result of the close cooperation between the two Danish Fisheries organizations in EU and international matters. The two fisheries organizations have stepped up their efforts in the EU, not least due to Brexit.
Danish Fishers PO and Danish Pelagic Producer Organization account for more than 95 pct. of all Danish landings.
- It is to the benefit of all Danish fisheries that the Danish Fishermen PO and Danish Pelagic Producer Organization work closely together on the EU agenda. We cannot sit back and be confident that our authorities will deliver all the messages that Danish fisheries wish to send to EU. There we need to be actively present in Brussels and work for our own interests towards the Commission and the European Parliament, says Esben Sverdrup Jensen, CEO of Danish Pelagic Producer Organization.
